| Pollinex-R is a pre-seasonal allergy vaccine that is designed to immunize you against ragweed. If you suffer from ragweed allergy, your body produces antibodies (called IgE antibodies) against ragweed. When you are exposed to ragweed in the summer, the IgE antibodies combine with the ragweed in your nose and eyes and gives rise to inflammation that causes the typical allergy symptoms of sneezing, stuffy/runny nose and itching.
Pollinex-R vaccine stimulates the immune system to produce a different type of antibody that prevents the ragweed allergen from combining with the IgE antibody. This is similar to how most other vaccines work and, like any other vaccine, Pollinex-R needs to be taken before exposure to the ragweed allergen in the season. Pollinex-R is administered in four injections, 5 to 10 days apart, starting in the mid to late spring so that the last injection is given before the start of the ragweed season in mid August. |
